Bad weather puts a dampener on weekly Bakewell market

It was a perfectly rotten weekend's weather at Bakewell Market on February 13, enough to cause the snowdrops to retract back into the ground and deter even the hardiest of farmers from selecting animals for market.

The results – less stock at Bakewell, with only 507 cattle and 1,722 sheep forward.

Shorter supplies did however, harden prices and it is pleasing to report that sheep averages were significantly improved. There were 290 store and breeding cattle on offer selling to a particularly packed ring of buyers. The ranks no doubt swelled by farming families out in force for half-term.
