Members of the public turned out in force at an Ashover Parish Council meeting after hearing of the application to build the homes at the junction of Narrowleys Lane and Moor Road, Ashover.

After the meeting, residents formed an action group to fight the plans, which they believe would ruin the village’s character.

Ashover resident Ellen Hardwick, leading the group, said: “There was well over 100 people there and we were all there for the same reason. The application is on a greenfield site and its outside the settlement development limit.

“There’s a strong feeling that Ashover is a very special village and it has a very strong sense of community. A housing estate would be very detrimental to the character of the village.”

The mother–of–two, who is a governor at Ashover Primary School, said if a large number of school age children came into the village the school would not be able to cope as it is already full.

Ellen said the group has been writing individually in objection to the plans and was seeking support from North East Derbyshire MP Natascha Engel, district councillor Peter Ramshaw and county councillor Barry Lewis.

The application has been submitted to North East Derbyshire District Council by Marsh Green Estates Ltd and would include ten per cent affordable houses.
