Architectural firm has designs on double glory

A Matlock architectural firm has high hopes of double glory after being shortlisted for a regional awards.

Two of the buildings designed by Evans Vettori Architects, based in Knowleston Place, have been nominated in the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) East Midlands 2014 Awards.

One of the buildings is High Edge, in Matlock – a private house which takes advantage of its position overlooking the town.

The other building is St Joseph’s church hall, Derby – a modern building designed to complement the existing 20th Century church.

Robert Evans, who co directs the firm with Dan Greenway, said: “We’re delighted and honoured to be shortlisted.

“If I was to guess why High Edge was shortlisted I would say it was the challenging site, because it was very steep.”

He added that the most unusual aspect of the project was that it took ten years to build from start to finish.

The firm has a good track record at the RIBA East Midlands awards, having won twice in 2011.

The buildings are two of 11 entries for the East Midlands awards, and the firm is the only entrant to have more than one building shortlisted.

Also nominated is a Hathersage studio. The timber building was designed by Studio Gedye to increase space in the architect’s family home.

Valeria Passetti, chairman of RIBA East Midlands, said: “I’m delighted that these 11 East Midlands projects have been recognised for their architectural excellence and shortlisted for RIBA East Midlands Awards.
