'All persons accounted for' as huge blaze destroys Buxton community centre

‘All persons have been accounted for,’ according to fire chiefs after a huge blaze ripped through a Buxton community centre earlier this afternoon.

Crews from across Derbyshire are still at the scene of the inferno which has torn through the Fairfield Centre in Victoria Park Road.

A spokesman for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue said crews were first alerted to the blaze at the children’s centre at 3.30pm this afternoon.

A spokesman said: “We have five pumps from Buxton and two from Glossop, Chapel-en-le-Frith and Whaley Bridge at a significant fire at a building on Victoria Park Road, Buxton.

“DFRS received the call at 15:30 hours. All persons are accounted for.

“Victoria Park Road is closed while we deal with the incident. People are asked to avoid the area.”

The centre is run by Derbyshire County Council. It is not known how many people were in the building at the time.
