Amber Valley Borough Council’s Deputy Leader, Councillor Chris Emmas-Williams, has expressed relief at the news.

In an announcement last Wednesday, January 28, Tesco named the 43 stores it will be closing across the country as part of its plan to cut costs.

And neither the Alfreton nor Heanor stores were included in the list.

Councillor Emmas-Williams, who is the council’s portfolio holder for regeneration, said: “We breathed a large sigh of relief when we saw that our two Tesco stores were safe.

“Tesco plays a key role in the local communities in Alfreton and Heanor, and is a very important employer.

“Good things are starting to happen in those town centres but we do need the presence of large retail names like Tesco, to underpin new regeneration initiatives.”

A total of 43 Tesco stores are being closed across the country as part of money-saving moves by the supermarket giant after a dip in profits.
