School caterers from Derbyshire County Council have won a silver Food for Life Catering Mark award in recognition of the high quality of their food.

The silver award recognises further work in primary schools and nurseries after gaining the bronze award last year.

The silver award focuses on the use of organic produce, ethical and environmentally friendly food, locally sourced ingredients and steps to offer healthier menus. The silver award also recognises that the catering service uses ingredients that are better for animal welfare.

The county council spends at least five per cent of its total ingredient budget on organic produce – such as organic meat from Lower Hurst Farm, in Hartington.
