A38 open again after big smash at Alfreton

Derbyshire Police have said that the A38 is fully open again following a collision involving several vehicles earlier.

Police completely closed parts of the road this morning and the northbound carriageway remained closed for much of the day while recovery work continued.

The incident happened shortly after 5am today when a Mercedes van which had broken down at the junction with the A61 in Alfreton was struck by another van, which was carrying chemicals.

A third van collided with the first two and then a lorry collided with all three vehicles.

Police and firefighters remained at the scene for many hours and three people who suffered minor injuries were taken to hospital.
