Bakewell, Castleton and Hathersage are classic spots to visit, but there are many wonderful lesser-known places that are well worth seeing.

. Wildboarclough
This quiet village, popular with visitors at weekends, claims to be where the last wild boar in England was killed. It's on the Cheshire side of the Peak Park, too - walkers come to go up Shutlingsloe, the 'Matterhorn of Cheshire', close by. Photo: Google

6. Tideswell
Tideswell near Buxton is one of the Peak District's bigger villages. It is home to the church of St John the Baptist, known as the 'Cathedral of the Peak' - this was built entirely in the 14th century. Photo: Jason Chadwick
7. Fenny Bentley
Fenny Bentley is in the southern part of the Peak Park, two miles north of Ashbourne. The church of St Edmund has an unusual monument to Thomas and Agnes Beresford who, together with their 21 children, are shown covered in a shroud.
