After watching the movie Hairspray multiple times I was intrigued to see if the musical could be even better - and I have to say it was nothing short of amazing.

The fast-paced show was packed with hilarious one liners and innuendos which left the audience roaring with laughter.

Leading lady Freya Sutton wowed the audience with her stunning vocals and captivating presence.

Other members of the cast who gave me goosebumps due to their powerful voices were Brenda Edwards, Dex Lee and Vanessa Fisher.

Former Blue Peter presenter Peter Duncan, Benidorm’s Tony Maudsley and TV star Claire Sweeney were also impressive.

The explosion of vibrant costumes, towering hair and extravagant backdrops set the scene perfectly and made me feel as though I had been transported back to the 1960s.

The dancers were phenomenal and oozed confidence throughout. Each spin, leap and turn was choreographed to perfection.

To top it all off the live band brought the whole production together and received a standing ovation.

Hairspray is of course set in Baltimore, 1962, where Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart uses her new-found fame to fight for equality.

I would highly recommend you “come on down and meet the nicest kids in town!”.

Hairspray is at Sheffield’s Lyceum until Saturday, February 13.
