Love in the air as choiraids village's charity

Youlgrave-Bangbutt Village Link hosted a delightful evening of songs and poetry to '˜celebrate love' and to raise funds for the charity towards reducing the mortality rate of mothers and babies in Sierra Leone.

The concert at Youlgrave village hall was entitled Spring is in the Air. Ironically, outside it was more a case of ‘winter is in the air’ as the audience arrived to sleet, cold and damp!

However, inside we were warmly greeted and shown to a table in the hall, set out informally in a café style.  The programme was amusingly and originally designed in the style of a menu - all very poignant, as we had been advised to bring our own refreshments.

Wyns Tor Singers launched confidently and competently into a diverse selection of songs, enthusiastically directed and conducted by Carol Taylor and accompanied by Nigel Taylor. We were treated to madrigals, folk songs, African and modern pieces, all on the subject of love.  Each set of songs was interspersed with thoughtful and amusing poetry and prose, read eloquently by four professional performers from the locality.  Positioned either side of the stage and amongst the audience, each took turns to read sections of the poem.  This provided an atmospheric stereo effect helping to entertainand maintain the full attention of the audience.

It was clear to see the singers, readers and audience alike all thoroughly enjoyed the evening and they were rewarded further with a light hearted rendition of Barbara Ann, where the audience clapped and tapped their feet in time to the music.

The evening raised £536. There will be further all-day events to support the charity on May 15 and June 17. See www.youlgravebangbutt.org for further information.
