Work starts on building 150 homes next to Chesterfield hospital - despite residents' fears

Work has started on building more than 150 homes on a Chesterfield hospital site.

Vistry Partnerships has started redeveloping part of the Walton Hospital site after Chesterfield Council granted planning permission in September – despite nearby residents’ fears over the increased traffic.

Vistry and Homes England are building 153 homes on unused land next to the hospital, off Whitecotes Lane and Harehill Road.

The site has lain derelict for four years after the disused western wing of the hospital was demolished.

Andy Reynolds, Vistry managing director for East Midlands, said: “Through careful consideration of the needs of Chesterfield, we have created a robust proposal which fits both ours and Homes England’s aspirations as well as that of the local area.

“Once our work on-site is complete, the scheme will deliver high-quality housing in an accessible location, and the reuse of brownfield land fits perfectly with our commitment to bringing forgotten sites back to life.”

The scheme will feature two, three and four-bedroom family homes – of which a minimum of 60 per cent will be affordable.

The redevelopment of the site is split across two parcels of land, with 103 homes built on land off Whitecotes Lane.

In an objection letter to Chesterfield Borough Council residents said traffic on Whitecotes Lane was ‘already atrocious’.

Other raised concerns about how schools and doctors will cope with new residents.

A further 50 affordable homes will be built on the adjacent Harehill Road land parcel by a small to medium sized enterprise, as part of a Homes England initiative to support smaller developers.

Vistry said the development should be complete by spring 2024.
