Now enthusiasts of the style can take their pick from all these items and more when the entire contents of a Derbyshire manor come up for auction.

Over Burrows is a country house in a secluded rural spot just outside Ashbourne. The principal house, originally the cottage to a larger hall not far away, dates back to the 1740s and after many years in a derelict state the property was restored in the mid-1980s.

The owner, who is relocating, has built up what the auctioneer calls an ‘enviable’ collection of furnishings ranging from ‘inherited heirlooms’ to ‘well-considered purchases’.

More than 200 lots will go under the hammer on April 8 and are expected to fetch up to £100,000.

Traditional 18th century and later oak and mahogany furniture, studded leather wingback chairs, a Chesterfield settee, bookcases and a pedestal desk are among the items predicted to perform well, said Adrian Rathbone, head of fine arts at Hansons Auctioneers which is handling the sale.

He singled out a table globe ‘which will be perfect for those wanting to create their very own gentleman’s study to relax in’.

“For those looking for the out of the ordinary, there is an unusual ‘porter’s’ armchair – a cosy chair incorporating a curved canopy,” said Adrian.

“Further highlights include the owner's favourite pair of walnut and tan leather chairs, a mirrored back bookcase and a lectern made from wood salvaged from Hardwick Hall.”

Hansons believe the lectern will appeal to fans of the Harry Potter books and films, as Hardwick’s exterior was used as Malfoy Manor in the movie Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

There will also be ‘a good selection’ of original artwork mostly from the 18th and 19th century, including a piece by 17th century Dutch artist Palamedes Palamedesz.

Over Burrows’ contents have been transferred to Hansons’ auction centre at Bishton Hall in Staffordshire, ready for research and cataloguing.

Hansons is looking for more potential lots that can form part of a wider country house-themed auction – jewellery, watches, silver, artworks and furniture are sought.
