Review: Fine food and classy decor at Twin Oaks Hotel, Palterton

Conveniently situated off Junction 29 is an unassuming hostelry called the Twin Oaks Hotel. It’s been quite some time since I last visited and I’d heard good reports.

The restaurant area is now called a brasserie and the bar dining area, where we ate, is now called the bistro.

With their upmarket names also comes classy decor, with modern glass light fittings and beautiful wood tables. The whole place was light and appeared more roomy than I remember.

The menu was full and varied from the usual selection on the grill to a less common cajun salmon.

I chose a starter from the specials board for £5.50 which was deep fried brie wedges. These were served on a bed of rocket and chard and drizzled with a sweet chilli dressing. The presentation was first class, just like the flavour.

My main course was baked goats cheese, red onion and thyme tartlet for £9.95. Two tarts arrived on a huge square plate, with a beautiful potato and rocket salad. Again the presentation was delightful, as was my friend’s sizzling fajita served with the usual trimmings. The vegetables were richly seasoned being spicy but well flavoured.

Desserts offered plenty of choice: mango and Malibu crème brulee, chocolate dime bar, cornflake tart and more, including my favourite, Baileys and toffee cheesecake at £5.95. Presented on a slate with a decorative white chocolate spoon, the creamy Baileys’ flavour was perfectly complemented by the rich toffee topping.

There is a separate lunch menu and a Sunday carvery on offer here and the hotel is now licensed to host civil ceremonies. It seems to be a great place to have a function, especially with the hotel rooms on site, and plenty of parking.

The bistro is a great place for a business lunch or a night with friends. It was a pleasant, non-pretentious environment with warm, friendly staff.

I certainly will be calling in again next time I’m passing.
