Festival musicians return to Ashover

Many people lamented the end of the Ashover Festival which last brought a summer concert to the village six years ago.

However next month there will be an opportunity to enjoy the acoustics of Ashover All Saints Church again when three outstanding musicians come together as a piano trio to perform works by Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky.

Stephen Bryant, violin, is the leader of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He is frequently invited to lead other orchestras and has broadcast on BBC Radio Three as a recitalist and chamber musician.

Mark Sheridan, cello, is a member of the BBC Symphony Orchestra who has performed, broadcast and recorded with several chamber ensembles; he performed Dvorak’s Cello Concerto recently with the Baltic Philharmonic Orchestra.

The third member of the trio is Caroline Jaya-Ratnam, piano, who, after graduating from Cambridge and completing her Master’s degree, was appointed junior fellow at the Royal College of Music. Caroline has appeared as a concerto soloist with the BBC Concert Orchestra live on BBC Radio Three, and has accompanied distinguished musicians such as Bryn Terfel in broadcasts.

As well as the festival-goers, the musicians also hold a warm spot in their hearts for Ashover as it was Mark and Stephen who asked to return to the village to perform again in Ashover Church.

The concert is on Saturday, June 4, at 7pm. Tickets £12 each (students £5), including refreshments, to book, call 01246 590431 or 01246 590263. The ticket includes an opportunity to meet the musicians while enjoying a glass of wine or soft drink and canapés in The Bassett Rooms, opposite the church, after the performance.
