ETO excel in Don Giovanni at Sheffield Lyceum Theatre

Before the first note was sung we knew this would be a good production by English Touring Opera. The company's excellent orchestra, a complicated set for a touring production and superb lighting all set the scene from the start of the overture.

The music was wonderful with all the lovely tunes and complex interweaving of themes for which this opera is loved. The singing and the acting were of such a consistently high quality that it is difficult to praise individuals. Mathew

Stiff’s beautiful baritone was just right for Leporello: Don Giovanni’s put-upon but far from innocent man servant. Camilla Roberts’ lovely soprano presented Donna Anna with great skill.

The opera was sung in English. We therefore missed the melodious sounds of the Italian but Jeremy Sams’ translation was witty enough to make the audience laugh. Don Giovanni was carried off to hell, the cast rejoiced and we

all had the thoroughly good evening we have come to expect when ETO visit this area.

The company bring Don Giovanni to Buxton Opera House on Saturday, April 23.
