Rev Adam Wells, who is the newly appointed Superintendent Minister for the Borders Mission Methodist Circuit, will be getting about from church to church on an eye-catching recumbent trike.

The cycle-buff swapped his two-wheeler for three when he was worshipping in Durham in 2001 and ever since he has fulfilled his duties and call-outs by trike to the delight of his congregation.

“I have always cycled and during my last post I cycled between 4,000 and 4,500 miles a year.

“I had a two-wheeler in 2001 and changed to use recumbent trikes in 2001 because you can carry more stuff and I can attach a four-foot trailer to carry my robes, my guitar and amplifier and a projector.”

Rev Wells used a two-wheeler during his time in West Scotland and switched to trikes when he moved to Durham and continued in the same vein during his last post as the Superintendant for the Loughborough circuit.

The 52-year-old, who is married with a daughter, was appointed as the Supt Minister for the Borders Mission Methodist Circuit on September 1 and within about a week he has already clocked up over 80 miles.

He will oversee 22 churches - with other full-time ministers and part-time staff - including the Wesley Methodist Church, in Alfreton, as well as Westhouses, Swanwick and Newton Methodist churches.

His wider circuit includes Old Tupton, Clay Cross, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Selston, Crich and South Wingfield.

Rev Wells has also used a trike on a charity ride from Loughborough to Southport and is now the proud owner of four of the fantastic “contraptions which he shares with wife Ann and daughter Hannah.

He added: “The congregation asked for someone with a car because it can be as much as 13 miles between the churches but they got me.

“However, they have been very happy to see that I can get about by these means.”

Rev Wells knows some of the area after growing up in the region as a youngster and thanks to his trike he has been out and about re-acquainting himself with the patch.

He said: “I think cycling is a wonderful way to get about and stay fit.

“Trikes are awesome in the snow too and in the dark I am always lit up like a Christmas tree so no one will miss me.

“I am very excited about coming here.

“There will be a lot of work to do and I am really looking forward to getting around and about on my trike to meet everyone.”
