Sheffield's Nether Edge Hospital in pictures - from the royal visit in the 60s to the closure of the maternity unit in the 90s

Over the years Nether Edge Hospital treated thousands of patients and was the workplace for hundreds. Which photos bring back memories in this retro gallery?

Nether Edge Hospital opened in 1929 and joined the National Health Service in 1948, after the dining hall and nurses' home were damaged by enemy bombing in December 1940 during the Second World War.

The main hospital closed in 1990 and most of the site was acquired by Gleeson Homes in 1997 and subsequently developed for residential use.

We have unearthed these great retro pictures of when the Duchess of Kent visited, and comedian Charlie Williams entertained the patients.
