Chesterfield was previously under the second tier of the original coronavirus lockdown system which was revealed back in October, preventing households from mixing with each other in most indoor settings such as in restaurants, pubs or each other’s homes.

Boris Johnson is to provide details of what the new, strengthened three-tier lockdown system will look like across England today, after national shutdown restrictions are lifted next month.

The town is anticipated to be placed in the first or second level of the new Covid-19 restrictions which are yet to be unveiled, after it was previously in the ‘high’ tier before the country-wide lockdown.

But ministers will confirm which measures Chesterfield will be subjected to from December 2, on Thursday.

What will change under the new system?

Under tier two of the brand new lockdown system, pubs and restaurants which serve ‘substantial meals’ will be allowed to reopen, however pubs in areas placed in the highest level will have to stay closed except for takeaway services.

The 10pm curfew rule is set to be changed, with pubs and restaurants allowed to stay open until 11pm under the new rules.

The idea behind the plans is to ensure customers make their last orders at 10pm, giving people more time to finish their food and drink before the premises are forced to close.

Customers will still have to stay within their households while visiting pubs and restaurants.

Can non-essential shops reopen?

It is still not yet clear which businesses will be allowed to reopen under the new, regional rules but the ban on outdoor grassroots sport is set to be lifted in all areas, despite differing restrictions.

Under the old lockdown system which was introduced across England in October, local authority leaders gave advice on whether businesses such as casinos or gyms should be closed in the areas under the highest restrictions.

However this could change following the new rules, as non-essential business and gyms are anticipated to be allowed to welcome customers in all areas.

Places in tier-three will also receive mass testing – in an attempt to slow the spread of the virus.
