Derbyshire chippy fires up its fryers to cook meals for key workers and care home residents

Staff at Model Chippy wanted to show their gratitude to the dedicated key workers at Richmond Care Home on Recreation Road.

Owner of the popular chip shop, Malcolm Allsop, said, “The staff at Richmond are working so hard to keep their residents safe. Everyone can see the great work they’re doing, and this was the best way we could thank them.”

Model Chippy has been temporarily closed since March 25 following Government guidance to help slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Malcolm delivered the fish and chips to staff at Richmond Care Home, leaving the box of hot food on the doorstep while keeping a safe distance.

Care home manager Kate Birch said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity of the Shirebrook community. Cooking fish and chips for everyone in our home is a huge treat – not least for our hardworking kitchen staff.”

Richmond Care Home, a 40-bedroom residential and dementia care home, has been closed to visitors since the country went into lockdown on 23rd March 2020.

The care home’s community activities organiser, Natasha Westwood, said: “It’s a difficult time for our residents. We can’t go on our usual outings to local cafés and restaurants, so this has given everyone an extra lift.”

Staff at the Model Chippy, and the staff and residents of Richmond Care Home, will be clapping for carers on Thursday evening to show their support.
