Chesterfield Royal Hospital thanks hard-working staff caring for nearly 200 Covid-19 patients

Staff at Chesterfield Royal Hospital have been praised for their hard-work in ‘challenging’ times as they continue to care for almost 200 coronavirus patients – 16 of which are in intensive care.

In a message posted to Facebook, Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust shared a video of deputy chief nurse Sarah Ward who thanked healthcare workers for their commitment and due-diligence as they treat 180 people for Covid-19.

The hospital admitted the situation ‘remains challenging’ as a total of 16 patients being cared for by the trust are now in intensive care after testing positive for the virus.

There remains another 274 people on other non-covid wards within Chesterfield Royal, with a host of medical conditions.

"Our COVID-19 position remains challenging", a spokesperson for the hospital said.

“Today we are looking after 180 people who’ve tested positive for Coronavirus - 16 of whom are in our ITU.

“Of course we’re not just caring for COVID-19 patients either. There are another 274 people on our wards right now with a host of other urgent medical and surgical conditions.

“We remain very proud of the way that our staff have rallied to care for patients – and each other, but we’re also incredibly grateful to you – our community - for staying home and helping us to stay as safe as possible.

"It really does mean such a lot.”

Latest NHS England data shows a total of 321 patients have died from coronavirus deaths within 28 days of a positive test, while being cared for by the trust.

In a video message, Chesterfield hospital’s deputy chief nurse applauded the community for ‘continuing to do the right thing’.

Sarah Ward said: "Our staff are working incredibly hard under really, really difficult circumstances.

"So I want to say a huge thank you, keep doing your part, you’re doing a brilliant job and we are really, really proud of you all.

"To our friends, to our families and to our wider community, again a huge thanks both for supporting us but also continuing to do the right thing.

"Don’t forget hands, face, space is still as important as ever, even more so.

"Stay in wherever possible, take up your vaccination invitation as it comes through.

"Please keep us safe.”
