Secondary schools, sixth forms and colleges are expected to welcome their first students back from June 15, it was announced on Sunday evening.

Pupils in years 10 and 12, who are due to sit their GCSEs and A levels next year, will be the first to return, and the Government says around a quarter of these students will be in at any point.

Primary schools are due to welcome back children in reception, year one and year six from June 1, with nurseries and other early years providers expected to reopen their doors from that date for children of all ages.

The National Education Union (NEU) says schools should only reopen when five conditions are met, including the number of new coronavirus cases being ‘much lower’ than at present and ‘extensive arrangements’ in place for testing and contact tracing.

In Sheffield, the city’s Labour MPs and the council’s cabinet member for education have said an ‘effective and comprehensive test, track and isolate system’ must be in place, with testing data shared with Sheffield Council, before schools reopen.

The president of Sheffield’s NEU has called on the council to postpone the re-opening of schools in the city.

Doncaster’s mayor Ros Jones has also recommended that schools and nurseries in her borough should not open on June 1 due to concerns about the number of COVID-19 cases, the availability of personal protective equipment (PPE), and a lack of understanding of capacity within schools.

The Government says schools will only reopen if its five tests, including sufficient testing and PPE, are met by Thursday, and has acknowledged that some schools may not be able to reopen immediately

It says ‘full social distancing may not be possible’ but class sizes will be reduced, break times will be staggered, extra cleaning will take place and children, staff and their families will have access to testing.
