Headteacher Helen McVicar said: “A lot has been written and said about our young people in the media; how they are the lost generation. However, there is a different way to look at the same experience, a different story to tell.

"We can describe our young people not as the ‘lost generation’ but the ‘crucial generation’ who have built a resilience and awareness of the fragility of the world. They are a unique set of young people who understand the way people work together, the way that self-sacrifice saves lives and self-discipline builds community.

“I am very proud of all our young people and how they have adapted and responded to the uncertainty and change they have faced this year at school. This period in education has been like no other but their success is testament to the dedication and commitment of the students, families and staff at Nethetherthorpe.

"I wish all our students well in the future, whether at university, under taking apprenticeships or in the world of work.”

The results have seen students at Netherthorpe School offered places in top universities across the country as well as a wide range of apprenticeships with local, national and international organisations, including Higher Level Apprenticeship programmes.

Director of Post 16, Greg Mason, said: “I could not be prouder of this year group. They have worked so incredibly hard across both school closures and have remained focused and dedicated right up to the very end.

"It is in times of adversity true character prevails and in addition to keeping on top of their work in school, many of our Sixth Form students took it upon themselves to help in the community as key workers.

“They have had a very uncertain two years and whilst it’s not the Sixth Form experience they signed up for, they have shown perseverance and dedication throughout.”
