Stacey’s Bakery has launched the eye-catching, flag-emblazoned design to coincide with the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, which takes place this Friday, May 8.

Past and present service personnel will also benefit from the tasty addition to the bakers’ repertoire as £2 from every sale will be donated to the Royal British Legion charity.

The cake is a six-inch, plain sponge cake, with vanilla buttercream frosting in the middle and on the outside with coloured sprinkles, and features the words VE Day 75 1945-2020. The bakery is also selling patriotic VE Day cupcakes in-store too, for £1.50 each, which are available on the website and in-store.

David Stacey, managing director of Stacey’s, is a fourth-generation baker and great-grandson of the firm’s founder Guy Stacey, who was a soldier.

He said: “My great-grandfather was invalided out of the army in the First World War and became the family’s first baker.

“We are extremely proud of our country’s servicemen and women and this is our way of showing our appreciation for their sacrifice.

“With the current coronavirus epidemic going on, people may not be able to mark the occasion with as grand a gesture as they would have liked. But at least with this cake they can celebrate at home.”

As well as the VE Day cake, which is available online and in-store, Stacey’s is also encouraging would-be bakers to get crafty and design their own cake.

They can visit the Stacey’s website and click the ‘Sweet Treats’ category and then ‘Family Cakes’ section and then click on the ‘Design your own cake’ picture and follow the simple instructions, which include downloading a template.

Email your design to [email protected] and the design will be uploaded to the site within two days. It can then be ordered from there.

David added: “There are already a few designs on there to choose from. It is a good way for people to connect with those they may be buying a cake for.

“Someone has created one for a Nottingham Forest supporter, and kids’ drawings are popular, too. The brighter the colours, the better they come out.

“It’s a great way to provide some cheer in these current times.”

Stacey’s branch in Bath Street, Ilkeston, has been open since 1934 and there are also branches in the town’s South Street, as well as in Nottingham Road, Eastwood, and Market Street, Heanor.
