Nomination for shop that keeps things local

A newly–opened Peak District shop is already proving that keeping it local pays off after being nominated for an award.

White’s Spar Calver, in Calver, has been nominated for a countryside Alliance Award.

The new farm shop–style store was opened by Edward White in August this year.

He commented: “I currently stock products from around 10 local suppliers and emphasise the ‘Best of British’, including locally grown fruit and vegetables, and locally made Bakewell Pudding products, which are produced just a few miles away from the store.”

Fruit and vegetables are displayed in boxes lined with locally grown straw for a rustic and authentic ‘farm-style’ feel.

Edward believes stocking local goods supports local businesses, and reflects regional tastes, flavours and identity.

“By stocking local foods, I also play a part in protecting the environment,” he said.

“By keeping food miles to a minimum.

“Shelf edge signs indicate how far produce has travelled from farm to store – often only two or three miles.

“I am proud of my local community, and pleased to display this pride in–store, through the products I supply.”

The Countryside Alliance Awards are seen as a celebration of rural life, communities, and the enterprises within them, and are nicknamed ‘The Rural Oscars’. The value the contribution made by people who go above and beyond the call of duty for their communities.

White’s of Calver is a third generation family store, which has been in the local community for more than 90 years.

Regional finalists will be announced in early 2014 and regional winners will be invited to the grand final at the Houses of Parliament in April 2014.
