Pictures as shops reopen and Chesterfield begins life in Tier 3 of Covid restrictions

Chesterfield residents woke this morning to life in the highest tier of new localised coronavirus restrictions.

The town – along with the whole of Derbyshire – has been placed under the Government’s Tier 3, or ‘very high alert’, level in a bid to curb the spread of the virus.

This means non-essential shops, gyms, hairdressers and other personal care businesses can reopen, with the formal instruction to stay at home coming to an end.

The “rule of six” will again apply for outdoor gatherings in all areas.

Places of worship will be able to open and weddings will be allowed within local restrictions.

However, hospitality venues must remain closed. People must not meet socially indoors or in most outdoor places with anybody they do not live with, or who is not in their support bubble.

Councillor Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “We understand the concern and frustration that this latest announcement will cause for many people, particularly local businesses which have already endured so much disruption and hardship this year."
