Chesterfield council ‘continuing to progress’ with key projects which will create thousands of jobs

More than £1billion of investment is taking place across the borough with a number of ambitious developments either taking place or in the pipeline.

Councillor Tricia Gilby, leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “The council is continuing to progress its ambitious growth programme that will deliver thousands of new jobs to the town and borough both during the construction phases and once works are complete.

“This includes the Northern Gateway scheme where construction of the new enterprise centre on the Donut roundabout started on site during the lockdown period.

“The project will result in high-quality, flexible, office space being made available on easy-in and easy-out letting terms to businesses just starting out or looking to grow their company here in Chesterfield.”

As part of the Northern Gateway, discussions are also ongoing with businesses interested in occupying units below the town’s new Premier Inn hotel on Elder Way.

A number of other big schemes being supported by the council include Chesterfield Waterside, PEAK and Staveley Works.

Coun Gilby added: “Plans are also progressing well in relation to improvements to the public realm on Elder Way and taking forward the Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield project which will see a number of enhancements made to Chesterfield’s famous market grounds.”

Last month, the council unveiled the Chesterfield Economic Recovery Plan which outlines what it and other organisations will do to help the local economy bounce back from the coronavirus pandemic – including delivering a new business start-up support programme.

This will encourage people who may have lost their jobs during the crisis to bring forward new business ideas, with funding, expert advice and a premises location service available.

Chesterfield residents and businesses will also be able to access a new virtual skills and careers information hub.

Peter Swallow, chair of Destination Chesterfield, said: “Despite these being challenging times, the future also holds very exciting opportunities for growth and jobs in the borough holding true to the town’s promise as a great place to live, work and invest.”
