Changes revealed as part of PEAK development near Chesterfield
Leisure entrepreneur David Lloyd and his Adrenaline World venture are no longer involved with the PEAK development, the Derbyshire Times has learned.
Last year, councillors approved a planning application for Mr Lloyd’s Adrenaline World – an indoor adventure centre which promised activities including zip lines, trampolining and e-karts – to be built at the site of PEAK, formerly known as Peak Resort, on the 300-acre Birchall Estate near Unstone.
Now, it has been confirmed another company, Summit Resorts and Developments Ltd, will instead deliver an indoor activity centre – called the Summit at Peak – at the site.
A spokesperson for Summit Resorts and Developments Ltd told the Derbyshire Times: “David Lloyd is no longer involved in the Summit at PEAK (formerly Adrenaline World) at any level.
“David Lloyd, the individual not the club, was never an investor in the project. He was originally brought in at an operational and branding level.
“The decision was made to break ties with David Lloyd by the directors of the investment company behind the Summit.
“This was a conscious decision to eliminate further confusion caused by the association with David Lloyd Clubs and also to better align the business with the fund’s values.”
The company spokesperson said polar explorer Robert Swan will be the ‘brand ambassador’ for the Summit at PEAK, which is expected to open next year.
They added: “With planning permission approved, construction of the Summit is now under way.
“The exterior will remain as originally designed and permitted. The interior will support the same planning use as approved.
“Over the course of the build the construction will create an estimated 120 jobs. Upon completion the facility will bring around 100.”
They added that activities offered by the centre were now being reviewed to ‘ensure they comply with new Covid guidelines’ and added: “Our focus has, and always will be, creating a positive space for the community to enjoy. Every person at the Summit at PEAK is now aligned to this mission.
“Our project is aimed to have a positive effect on the local people, environment and community.”
Councillor Dean Collins, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for economic growth, said PEAK ‘offers an incredible opportunity for Chesterfield and the development is vital for the long-term future of the borough’.
He added: “It will further cement the area as a destination for tourists from both across the UK and the rest of the world, which in turn will create more good-quality jobs in our community and will stimulate economic growth across the borough.”
A council spokesperson added that developers would not need to submit another planning application for the Summit at Peak ‘unless there is a material change in the scheme, which we believe is not the case at this stage’.
A spokesperson for ex-tennis player Mr Lloyd confirmed he and his Adrenaline World venture were no longer involved with PEAK, and added that he planned to go ahead with Adrenaline World centres at other sites in the UK.
