The Derbyshire Singers and Harlequin Brass will be performing from 7.30pm on Saturday, March 21.

One of the county’s premier choirs, The Derbyshire Singers will be performing English works spanning three centuries.

Two pieces for choir and brass by exciting contemporary English composers, Bob Chilcott’s Jubilate and Jonathan Willcocks’s Magnificat, combine wonderful harmonies with subtle changes of mood - and some good tunes.

Featured alongside them will be the majestic Funeral Sentences by Henry Purcell, composed for the funeral of Queen Mary II. The concert will open with the inspiring I was Glad by Hubert Parry with its glorious opening fanfare and choral shout of praise, heard at every coronation since that of Edward VII in 1902.

The Derbyshire Singers are renowned for working with eminent professional musicians, and in this concert they are joined by ten-piece ensemble Harlequin Brass, who in addition to accompanying the singers will also entertain with pieces of their own. Completing the line-up will be rising star soprano Catriona Hewitson, who will perform songs by Purcell and Herbert Howells.

n Belper & District Organ Club’s next presentation will feature two members giving a performance at an eagerly-awaited concert. It will take place on Saturday, March 21, at The Congregational Church, Green Lane, Belper.

Ex-Bakewell postman Jason Lee, who moved to Brighton some years ago, is returning for this special evening. He will be joined by the club’s concert secretary Nigel Dawes.
