Wonderland call for talented youngsters

Derby Theatre is looking for young people (girls and boys) aged between 8 -16 to be in its Christmas production of Alice in Wonderland.

Auditions will take place on Saturday, September 3, with the successful young actors performing on the main stage at Derby Theatre during December and January.

Sarah Brigham, artistic director at Derby Theatre and director of Alice in Wonderland, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to gain audition experience and to perform alongside a professional company of actors.

“Alice in Wonderland is going to be a big, bold and magical production for the whole family to enjoy and I am looking forward immensely to a young company of local actors being an integral part of our Christmas show this year.

“So, if you are between eight and 16 years of age, enthusiastic, eager to perform and showcase your talent, then we look forward to hopefully seeing you at the auditions.”

Auditions on Saturday, September 3, will be held in groups of 20 in Derby Theatre’s Studio, with time slots at 10am, 11.15am, 1pm, 2.15pm and 3.30pm and each session will last for one hour.

Young people will take part in a range of drama exercises and games and be asked to sing in a group.

Previous experience in performing is not essential. Those wanting to audition should call Derby Theatre’s Box Office on 01332 593939 to book a slot.

Once cast, there will be three teams of six young actors, aged between eight and 16, who will play a range of roles, including Miniature Alices and Playing Cards.

Each team will perform on different dates during the run. Those cast will take part in a rehearsal weekend with director Sarah Brigham and will then be required to rehearse twice a week during the rehearsal period plus Saturdays.

Additional rehearsals may take place as the production nears to opening.

Alice in Wonderland at Derby Theatre opens on Friday, December 2, and runs until Saturday, January 7.

n Derby Youth Musical Theatre will be performing Frank Loesser’s much loved musical Guys And Dolls at Derby’s Guildhall Theatre from September 21-24.

Following their highly acclaimed production of Phantom Of The Opera, DYMT return with this hugely popular music al set amongst New York gangsters, gamblers and nightclub singers.

This is the world of characters such as Nathan Detroit, Miss Adelaide, Sky Masterson, Harry The Horse and Nicely-Nicely Johnson.

It also features songs such as Luck Be A Lady Tonight, Sit Down You’re Rocking The Boat and Sue Me, among many others.

This musical will be performed by talented youngsters from all over the county.
