Deep in the Suffolk jungle of Bungay (pop4,895) a lion has stirred.

Luke Wright, who performed at the Labour Club, Saltergate Chesterfield, on Saturday night roared, prowled and purred through a routine of social and political satire interwoven with acute observations of his own childhood and family life as a hands-on dad.

An appreciative audience were taken on a tour of small town bigotry, political cynicism and genuine outrage at the unfairness and lack of justice that characterises so much of society today. From the Scottish referendum to local council planning decisions via the pathos of lives trapped by routine and small lives changed by events beyond their control, Luke’s poetry painted a montage of modern Britain with humour and a deep respect for the lives of ordinary people.

The term ‘performance poetry’ does scant justice to a man on a mission to explore and explain the significance of the apparently insignificant, the lunacy lurking in a political culture that creates and tolerates inequalities and the humour inherent in the clash between different social classes.

A brilliant night of entertainment that left the audience happier and more thoughtful than when they arrived.

Luke Wright is currently on tour and can be seen at next at the Merlin Theatre, Frome, on April 24. His latest publication Mondeo Man is available from Penned In The Margins.
