Producer David Hopkinson said admission would be free and collections would be taken for the Belper-based club’s funds.

He said: “We have had close links with the Penguin Club for some time and members visit our church each Christmas to present their festive show. We felt that it would be a good gesture to help support their funds.”

“Hero” is set in the 1960s as plans are being made to honour the bravery of a World War I veteran. But the ex-Army man’s family discover that some secrets are best left undisturbed.

David said: “It is a fitting play to stage this year, as this is the centenary of the outbreak of the 1st World War.”
