Chesterfield College students to present Rent

In the show's 20th anniversary year, Chesterfield College Performing Arts Company present the hit musical Rent which is loosely based on Puccini's opera La Boheme.

Written by Jonathan Larson, the show revolves around friends in 1990s Manhattan’s East Village struggling to build the lives of their dreams. Poverty, drug abuse, HIV/AIDS, social tension, and political unrest, among other hardships, challenge the group physically and emotionally. Facing the problems head on, they make personal self-discoveries and find what really matters most in life.

The cast includes Ben Featherstone (Roger), Lucy Jenkinson (Mimi), Jacob Wolstenholme (Mark), Tyler Brealey (Angel), Jordan Stanbrook (Collins), Jasmine Elliot (Maureen), Chloe Blake (Joanne) and Luke Hutchinson (Benny).

They are joined by an ensemble of 16 to 20-year-old students which provides spine-tingling harmonies and dynamic choreography.

Chesterfield College has a well-established performing arts course and this will be its third musical at the Pomegranate Theatre after expanding into musical theatre in 2013. Previous performances of Our House and Little Shop of Horrors received excellent reviews.

Becky Parker, director and choreographer, said: “Rent has been a huge challenge and is by far the biggest show we have produced. Students are exploring important and relevant issues surrounding sexuality, health and wellbeing and it is vital that they are approached with care.”

Rent will be staged at Chesterfield’s Pomegranate Theatre on June 21 and 22, at 7.30pm with a Wednesday matinee at 2pm. Tickets £13.
