Brilliant show provides fun for all the family

For me, the annual trip to the pantomime is always a traditional curtainraiser to the Christmas festivities ahead.

And I have always been a devotee of the slapstick fun served up at Nottingham Playhouse — even more so now that I can scream ‘he’s behind you’, safe in the knowledge I am just joining in with my two youngsters (yeah, right!).

And once again this year, the Playhouse excelled with its colourful rendition of Sleeping Beauty, packed to the rafters with sing-alongs punctuated with modern, up-to-the minute chart hits.

Being brought up on seeing Kenneth Alan Taylor on stage at the Wellington Circus venue, I went along concerned for the cast being bereft of such a Playhouse icon.

But their performances were seamless, built on stalwart showman John Elkington as Nurse Tilly.

Other familiar faces who once again grabbed their share of the limelight were Tim Frater as Jerry the Jester and his employer Anthony Hoggard as King Hubert.

All in all a brilliant show, the excellence of which was proven by the smiles on the faces of my six-year-old son and four-year-old daughter.
