Actor’s tribute to political activist Paul Robeson

Following a successful career as a famous actor and singer, he was a political activist and played a huge role in the civil rights movement in America.

In a compelling tour-de-force performance, writer and actor Tayo Aluko recreates Paul’s interesting life in his one-man play Call Mr Robeson: A Life, with Songs – due to play at Pavilion Arts Centre, Buxton, on Friday, January 30.

The play follows the remarkable events of Robeson’s life including being branded a traitor to his country when he became too radical for the establishment.

Its evocative soundtrack includes a dramatic rendition of Ol’ Man River.

Aluko, who has performed the play on stages across the UK, USA, Canada and Jamaica, and who is recently back from a performance in Nigeria said: “I have a long and pleasant history with Buxton, having competed successfully in festivals there decades ago. I am so pleased to be returning there with this wonderful story of Paul Robeson whose life reminds us of how connected we all are, through music and in many other ways.”
