Springwell Community College pupils all set for A Christmas Carol

Pupils at Staveley’s Springwell Community College are putting the finishing touches to their production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

The production will be headed by Joshua Poole in the role of old miser Ebenezer Scrooge. Joshua has not only learned hundreds of lines for the role but has also composed some of the music that will be used throughout the production.

There are more than 40 actors and dancers collaborating on the show, which will be staged in the college hall from December 9-11 at 7pm.

Drama tutor Cuan Jacques said: “We’re promoting the arts, in a period when even the Education Secretary is trying to encourage people to just do science and maths - we’re standing up for the arts and allowing our pupils to shine in the subjects the excel at and enjoy.

“We’re also promoting our community links - as 200 of our feeder primaries, including Barrow Hill, Staveley Juniors and Hollingwood will be coming for a matinee performance.”

Pupils from Springwell’s year 9 will also watch the show to help promote their understanding of Dickens’ novel.

A Christmas Carol tells the tale of skinflint Scrooge who is visited by a range of spirits as they try to teach him the true meaning of Christmas.
