The concert marks the debut of the society’s newly-appointed musical director, Jon Davies, who has a background in church music, starting out as a choirboy from the age of six.

He went on to play woodwind instruments and graduated from Oxford University with a music degree before becoming a peripatetic music teacher.

Jon is very excited about his new apppointment. “The society has been going for 110 years with an incredible pedigree,” he said, “so I feel a degree of responsibility that the decisions we take resonate with the values of the society which are first and foremost putting on performances to the highest standard, which is marked by its haul of NODA awards and positive reviews.

“It is an honour to be MD with a responsibility to not only make sure that things continue in the way they have been doing for such a long time but also to change with the times, so that we are still giving performances that the theatre-going public want to see.”

Songs From the Shows will be performed at the PomegranateTheatre on Friday and Saturday, November 20 and 21, at 7.30pm. Tickets, priced £12, from the theatre box office (tel. 01246 345222).
