Richard Alston Dance Company to perform at Buxton Opera House for first time

World renowned choreographer Richard Alston is celebrating the 20th anniversary of his dance company with a stunning triple-bill which is heading for Buxton.

The company pay their first visit to the Opera House on Tuesday, February 3.

Their programme includes Illuminations which is set to Britten’s masterpiece and paints a vivid picture of the wild young genius Arthur Rimbaud, depicting images from the turbulent life of the young poet, visionary and misfit in equal part.

Rimbaud travelled to remote regions of Africa and Asia and it is thought that the somewhat dark poetry was conjured up with the help of the hashish pipe and his love of absinthe.

Rejoice in the Lamb, which is danced to Britten’s setting of Christopher Smart’s poetry, is fuelled by religious fervour and playful eccentricity. The creation will be augmented by luscious costumes and spectacular lighting.

A dramatic dance piece entitled Burning is choreographed by Martin Lawrence. It will be danced to Franz Liszt’s Dante Sonata with live accompaniment by renowned pianist Jason Ridgway.

The show is at 7.30pm. Tickets £13 and £16.
