Review: Seven Brides for Seven Brothers at Sheffield Lyceum

The Wild West didn’t come much wilder than Oregon bear country, and the men were as wild as the mountain creatures – until the women came along to tame them.

Or so Seven Brides for Seven Brothers would have us believe. The classic musical is at Sheffield’s Lyceum this week, with a hardworking cast of dozens.

Alex Hammond substituted for the indisposed Sam Attwater on the first night, and found backwoodsman Adam’s vulnerable streak as well as his tough-guy exterior. Helena Blackman is feisty Milly, who marries Adam in haste, and finds she has to civilize his six rumbustious brothers as well.

Milly succeeds, of course, but not without several displays of well-toned male chests and plenty of acrobatic dancing of the yee-haw variety.

It’s a great night out, full of fun, energy and familiar songs.

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers runs until Saturday, February 14.
