Review: The Elias String Quartet at St John’s Church Buxton

This was a most enjoyable concert. The Elias Quartet has always been good and the rapport between them has developed to a remarkable degree in recent years.

The concert started with Haydn’s String Quartet in C, Opus 33 No 3, which was bright and lively. This was aptly followed by Mozart’s String Quartet in C No 19, from the set of quartets which he dedicated to Haydn.

The highlight of the concert was Beethoven’s String Quartet No 8 in E minor (Opus 59, no2). For some time now the Elias Quartet have been playing all the Beethoven String Quartets in various venues and recording live performances which have got better and better. They played with great sensitivity and a joy which the audience shared.

This was their first performance at the Buxton Festival, I hope they return in future years.
