New play puts village life under the microscope

East Midlands touring theatre company New Perspectives will perform Entertaining Angels at the BPS Hall, St John’s Road, on Saturday at 7.30pm.

The play introduces Reverend Stephen Parr, a new vicar in a small rural parish, who is faced with a dwindling congregation, an uncompromising church warden and a lonely widower. Pleasing everyone, including his wife Mel, is proving rather difficult.

Enter Kevin, an enigmatic stranger who turns up on the church’s doorstep, seeking a place to shelter. Who is this mysterious man? Where has he come from? And where is he going?

Kevin’s sudden arrival leaves a lasting impact on the entire community and rocks the delicate foundations of Stephen’s faith.

Written by Brendan Murray, Entertaining Angels also examines the role of the church in rural communities today. The play has grown out of research in villages and will be a powerful and thought-provoking evening of very entertaining theatre.

New Perspectives, who have visited Tideswell many times over the years, premiered their new play at The Lakeside Theatre in Nottingham before beginning its tour of the region.

The production is suitable for adults and families including older children.
