Get hooked on Peter Pan collars

SIXTIES-inspired Peter Pan collars are the hottest adornment for necks this autumn.

Just as the fictional character refused to grow up, the Peter Pan collar refuses to go out of fashion.

It’s stepped straight out of Never Never Land and onto the catwalks once again.

Cute, high-necked and undeniably prim-and-proper, it featured on the runways at DKNY and Louis Vuitton.

And with modish Sixties swiftly taking over the high street, this is one way to give a retro nod to the era without going overboard.

There are numerous ways to achieve the look; you can buy ready-made Peter Pan collared pieces, or you can create your own look by investing in a detachable collar. Your dress-making DIY will enable you to revamp stacks of your favourite items.

This look works well in monochrome, but when used with strong, bold colour it has a drama of its own. For example, you could channel your inner Red Riding Hood in a berry-coloured cape complete with Peter Pan collar for £330 from the Boutique collection at Jaeger in Meadowhall. Or you could opt for a royal blue mini dress with gold accent detailing for £50 from Next.

And while we’re talking hot colour, if you’re feeling bold AND rich, splurge on a pink silk and wool mix top at £225 from the designer diffusion label Sonia By Sonia Rykiel at the online boutique My-Wardrobe.

For a sharp look, however, opt for a fresh white collar against black.

As easy way of achieving this look is by layering a white round-collared shirt over a jumper or under a jacket.

Wearing a dainty collared dress or blouse can also be a very demure look, so play Fifties housewife or super-efficient, Miss Jones-style secretary by picking a feminine and pretty print blouse with a Peter Pan collar, like the ones by label Louche at Joy boutiques or the nipped-waist, ruffled front versions just arriving at Oasis stores.

And for a Little House On The Prairie take on the trend, try a vintage-look tailored blouse from Topshop or a cute Peter Pan-collared dress going for a snip at £23 in Primark.
