Company pushes the boat out in HMS Pinafore

Tarantara Productions proved to be an exciting professional company when they performed HMS Pinafore at the Buxton Opera House, to the highest of standards.

The 26-piece orchestra, conducted by Martin Handley supported the accomplished and witty Gilbert and Sullivan singers.

The story begins with the love triangle between young captain’s daughter Josephine (a very talented Abigail Iveson), a low life sailor Ralph Rackstraw (Andrew Dickinson) and a highly respected yet remarkably ridiculous Sir Joseph Porter (Barry Clarke). A mention should also go to the talented Mrs Cripps, Little Buttercup (Frances McCafferty) and Captain Corcoran (Alexander Baker).

The production clearly lead us through the confusion and in true Gilbert and Sullivan tradition, twists the plot and resolves the chaos into a happy evening. The cast was filled with a strong ensemble of sailors, First Lords, “sisters, cousins and aunts”.

Offering those familiar and superb works this was a chance to revel in some of the greatest melodies; this work is as relevant to today’s audiences as it was in the 19th century. The artistic standards were extremely high.

Tarantara Productions are presenting HMS Pinafore at the Opera House on Saturday afternoon (February 6) st 2.30pm and Iolanthe at the Buxton Opera House on February 4 and 5.
