Charity stages a new opera

An inspired new opera with a cast including individuals experiencing homelessness will be premiering in Nottingham this weekend.

The Streetwise Opera production of To the Silkwood Tree will be staged at a special one-off performance taking place at Nottingham Contemporary on Saturday, May 16.

Written and directed by Hazel Gould, To the Silkwood Tree follows the story of a traveller on a long, uncertain road to an unknown destination. Set to music by established composer John Barber, the opera hopes to intrigue, entrance and send audiences away with a lift in their hearts.

Matt Peacock, chief executive for Streetwise Opera, said: “We’re really excited about this new opera in Nottingham, which is part of our Little Opera Season and promises to be something really special. The 20-strong cast have rehearsed weekly at Nottingham Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall getting ready for their debut We are all excited about working with Hazel and John, two of the most exciting artists in the country.”

Award-winning charity Streetwise Opera works with homeless people and uses music and performance to help them make positive changes in their lives.

Innovative and experimental pop band Firefly Burning (featuring composer John Barber on piano) will also play from 9.30pm in the Café Bar as part of the Saturday night Café.Bar.
