Charity holds open day at site in Cromford

A free public open day is taking place on Saturday in Cromford, at the world’s earliest industrial housing.

Building preservation charity the Landmark Trust will open North Street in Cromford, free to the general public from 10am to 4pm.

North Street is the earliest piece of planned industrial housing in the world.

Built in 1771 by Richard Arkwright to house his mill workers, North Street lies deep in the countryside at the heart of a designated World Heritage Site. Without any of the grimness of later workers’ terraces, No. 10 is one of Landmark’s quiet gems.

Cromford is an excellent little town, and the area is full of interest for those absorbed by industrial archaeology.

North Street is opening as part of the Derwent Valley Mills Discovery Days.

There is lots going on in the area so it makes for a great day trip to explore the region. Visit their website for more information.
