BUXTON FRINGE 2014: REC go global for Fringe show

Buxton youth theatre company REC, which is celebrating its 20th year this summer, is presenting two exciting shows at the Buxton Festival Fringe.

After enjoying success in last year’s festival when they won the award for Best Youth Drama for ‘Red Red Shoes’ and Best Young Actor for senior company member Siobhan Piercy, the REC companies return with ‘Blue Remembered Hills’ and ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’.

All of the REC’s talented young actors - the younger REC-ers (ages 6-10), junior company (ages 10-15) and senior company (ages 15-19) - have joined together for the fantastical adventure Around The World in 80 Days, which will be performed at the Pavilion Arts Centre Studio today (Thursday) and tomorrow (Friday) at 6pm, and on Saturday at 8pm.

Ex-REC member and co-founder of Underground Venues, Tom Crawshaw, has specially written the play, which has been adapted from Jules Verne’s classic story. In this thrilling race against the clock, Phileas Fogg abandons his quiet Victorian life for a crazy round-the-world voyage to save honour and fortune.

The Senior Company has also been performing Dennis Potter’s harrowing and moving play ‘Blue Remembered Hills’ at the Fringe, which can be seen for the final time tonight (Thursday) at 9.30pm, again at the Arts Centre Studio.

The play is set on a summer day in the school holidays against the backdrop of the Second World War. Seven children are out at play, however the ‘innocent’ childhood games they play hurtles them towards a life-changing tragedy.

REC’s current Artistic Director Kitty Randle directs this production.
