It could be dubbed Chesterfield Canal: the Musical, but the Pomegranate Youth Theatre’s spring production is actually called Cuckoo.

The title comes from the old name for the narrowboats that plied their trade on the canal in the 18th and 19th centuries, hauling stone, coal and people: just one of the fascinating facts that emerge as the 20-strong cast perform and recount a few of the many tales discovered through research into the 240-year-old waterway.

Some are true, other apocryphal, one or two dubious.

The Youth Theatre are cast as a diverse group of ramblers exploring the canal’s history: an inspired concept which allows them to play more than one role apiece.
