World music on your doorstep

Whatever your music taste there’s a gig to suit this season at Buxton’s Pavilion Arts Centre.

The programme ranges from ‘the Hendrix of the Sahara’ Vieux Farka Toure, to music from the Mongolian Steppe, to the silky sounds of Gretchen Peters and rousing folk music from Fay Hield and the Hurricane Party.

Vieux Farka Toure will be visiting the arts centre (February 2) with some of the most exciting sounds you are likely to hear this season. Demonstrating his expertise in African fingerstyle guitar, the son of Malian blues guitarist Ali Farka Toure, is a virtuoso in many musical styles and his work is regularly at the top of the New World Charts.

Folk songstress Fay Hield is best known for creating The Full English in 2013, which brought together the finest folk songs in the 20th century into a searchable database. She will be joined by her band the Hurricane Party (February 4) for a night of uplifting music.

World music will be on the doorstep with AnDa Union (February 10), bringing traditional music from the Mongolian Steppe. Described as music gatherers, the group’s stunning concert celebrates the rich and exotic sounds of their country’s past.

One of American country music’s most prolific songwriters Gretchen Peters, who has composed hits for Patty Loveless, George Strait and Bryan Adams will also visit the Arts Centre(February 13) as part of her 20th anniversary tour.

As usual Pavilion Arts Centre provides monthly jazz and classical concerts. Scaw Duo with bass clarinet and piano will explore the colourful side of classical music (on February 12, 1pm), whilst The Original Panama Jazz Band brings a sextet of trumpet, clarinet, trombone, bass, piano and strings (February 14, 1pm).
