It’s not often you write a restaurant review starting with dessert.

It’s not often you write a restaurant review starting with dessert.

But then again it’s not often you come across good old fashioned desserts as good as they are at The Swan in Ridgeway.

The pub sits on the Main Road in the pretty, affluent village of Ridgeway nestled between Chesterfield and Sheffield.

When we arrived at teatime it was already starting to fill up with diners and by 7pm most of the tables in the main room were taken.

The place itself is quite traditional with wooden beams and black and white pictures telling the history of the village, mirroring the traditional menu.

But enough about the decor let me tell you about those desserts! Billed as homemade, I opted for chocolate chip cookies and ice-cream and the other half sampled his favourite flapjack and custard.

Mine arrived in a tall sundae dish with chunks of deliciously sweet chocolate chip cookie scattered through creamy vanilla ice-cream.

His flapjack was buttery and soft and served with custard which had him reminiscing about school days.

At just £3.25 each we’d visit again just for those sweet treats!

Back to the beginning of the meal for starters we shared spicy breaded jalapeños (£3.95) stuffed with cheese which had a real kick to them.

For main continuing on a spicy theme I had the vegetarian 5 bean chilli (£6.95) - a perfect warmer for a cold Spring day and and the other half enjoyed a zingy chicken in sweet chilli (£6.95) which was packed with meat. Our request to have them served with half rice and half homemade chips wasn’t a problem and came at no extra cost.

The Swan’s food is traditional, homemade cooked food at good value. And if you’ve got a sweet tooth like me then your are on to a winner!
