Museum trip spurs Sarah’s paintings

DERBYSHIRE-born artist Sarah R Key’s starting point for paintings was a visit to Derby Museum’s taxidermy stores.

The photographs and memories taken from there helped in her exhbition, Where I End and You Begin, which is on show at the museums until October 28.

Sarah was particularly interested in the ‘diorama’, a method of presentation used in museum display cases, such as taxidermy.

The creatures in her pictures observe events, history, behaviour, art and the viewer. They are not bound by time, scale or gravity.

Sarah said: “There is a space that exists between our experiences of real places and the making of artworks, and this is a space where the imagination can take a journey to wherever it pleases. Allowing ideas to have a life of their own is where new forms might arise. This philosophy entirely underpins my approach to making paintings.”
