Proudly claiming to be an international sex symbol and body builder on his Twitter account, master magician Paul Daniels enjoys a good laugh.

He did plenty of chuckling during our interview, one of 13 on his day off at home in Henley-on-Thames with his wife and glamorous assistant, the very lovely Debbie McGee.

From social networking to the name of his latest run of shows, The First Farewell Tour, it seems that the charming 75-year-old’s life is one long giggle. Ahead of his visit to Buxton’s Pavilion Arts Centre on Wednesday next week, he reassured fans by saying: “I’m not giving up. If it’s good enough for the Rolling Stones and Status Quo to keep coming back, then it’s good enough for me. I tell Debbie that if I start to look like a doddery old fart, shoot me.”

“The show is about laugh time,” he said. “It is basically like a play, building up to the last trick which is hysterically funny.”

The 50-date tour takes the couple all over the country including Chesterfield, Our manager failed geography - we are going up, down and all over the place. We alternate on the driving,” he said.

Paul reckoned the secret to keeping the magic in their marriage was ‘separate bathrooms’ and getting enough work to keep his wife well-heeled. “The next tour will be called the Debbie McGee Shoe Fund Tour,” he said.

The conversation took a serious turn as Paul mulled over his harsh treatment by the national press in years gone by. He said: “Until the Leveson inquiry, newspapers thought they could write what they wanted. I successfully sued a number of them and, you know, the money I got is tax free.”
